SALT LAKE CITY, June 12, 2009—BSD Medical Corp. (NASDAQ:BSDM) today reported on the evolving clinical role of hyperthermia that was presented at the annual European Society for Hyperthermic Oncology (ESHO) Meeting, which was held in Verona, Italy on June 4 to June 6, 2009. The 25th annual ESHO meeting was held in conjunction with the 18th annual European BSD Users Meeting. The meeting title was “Improving Cancer Care in the 21st Century”. The object of the ESHO meeting was to review recent developments in the field of oncologic hyperthermia.
The current and planned multi-center clinical studies on hyperthermia were reviewed during the ESHO meeting. The ESHO Interdisciplinary Hyperthermia Study Group is currently facilitating clinical studies utilizing hyperthermia for treatment of the following tumors: head and neck tumors, germ cell tumors, colon carcinoma, bladder carcinoma, hodgkin`s- and non-hodgkin`s-lymphoma, malignant melanoma, breast cancer, cancer of the esophagus, ovarian carcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma, pleural mesothelioma, carcinoma of the prostate, carcinoma of the rectum, soft tissue sarcoma, and carcinoma of the cervix.
During the ESHO meeting, Prof. Dr. Sergio Maluta, Radiotherapy Department Chair, University Hospital of Verona, and President of the ESHO 2009 Meeting, and Dr. Stefano Dall’Oglio, University Hospital of Verona, reviewed the evolving role of clinical hyperthermia in a presentation titled, “Clinical Applications of Hyperthermia (Gynaecological Cancers, Rectum and Anal Canal, Prostate, Liver, Pancreas, Thoracic Wall, Neck, and Brain)”. Dr. Dall’Oglio reviewed six Phase III randomized superficial clinical studies that involved the use of hyperthermia combined with radiation and/or chemotherapy for the treatment of breast cancer, head and neck cancer, melanoma, and brain cancer. Dr. Dall’Oglio reported that all six studies had demonstrated patient benefit with minimal toxicity. Dr. Dall’Oglio also reviewed additional studies utilizing hyperthermia combined with adjuvant therapy, including combinations of radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, and hormone therapy. He reported that all of these studies had also demonstrated patient benefit combined with minimal toxicity for the treatment of a variety of tumors, including bladder cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, rectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, soft tissue sarcoma, liver cancer, and anal cancer.
