SALT LAKE CITY, June 25, 2009—BSD Medical Corporation (NASDAQ:BSDM, www.bsdmedical.com) today announced that comprehensive reimbursement in the Netherlands has been established to provide reimbursement for the use of hyperthermia and radiation therapy to treat both superficial and deep cancerous tumors. BSD Medical is a leading developer and worldwide provider of systems designed to deliver both superficial and deep hyperthermia.
The nationwide reimbursement will ensure that cancer patients who live in the Netherlands, as well as cancer patients who come to the Netherlands from other countries for treatment, will have a wide range of hyperthermia treatment modalities available to them.
The Dutch Healthcare Authority (Nederlandse Zorgautoriteitet) has released its reimbursement schedule for 2009 that integrates hyperthermia treatment into the radiotherapy general code structure and thus, for the first time, authorizes comprehensive reimbursement for both superficial and deep hyperthermia treatment when used in combination with radiotherapy. The new reimbursement schedule provides a payment of approximately $15,289 (€10.861) for a series of 4 superficial hyperthermia treatments and a payment of approximately $21,262 (€15.104) for a series of 5 deep hyperthermia treatments.
The new reimbursement covers the treatment of:
• recurrent breast cancer
• head and neck cancer
• melanoma
• cervical cancer
Hyperthermia has been shown to be the most potent radiosensitizing agent known to date. The efficacy of hyperthermia combined with radiation is due to the independent anti-cancer effects of hyperthermia combined with the ability of hyperthermia to increase the effectiveness of radiation therapy. The basis for the supra-additive effect of hyperthermia on radiotherapy comes from the ability of hyperthermia to kill tumor cells that have a low oxygen level, have a low pH, and are in the S-phase of division, which are all conditions that make tumor cells radioresistant. Hyperthermia has also been shown to reduce the ability of the tumor to form new blood vessels, which can inhibit tumor spread.
